The Internet is convinced that Elon Musk’s xAI trolled the OpenAI “Dots” launch

On Tuesday, OpenAI launched a new product called Dots, an always-on AI agent with a bubble avatar. While a colorful avatar may bring a smile, the biggest laugh after launch (we think) came from Elon Musk, the former OpenAI founder who quit, launched competitor Grok, and unsuccessfully sued.

This is because the domain “dot.com” is owned by xAI Mask and is currently redirecting to the download page for xAI’s Grok chatbot app. According to the Whois domain registry, this domain name was only transferred in July.

It’s entirely possible that xAI bought the domain for the usual reasons. The “dot” could have been a misspelling of the word “bot”, so it intercepted it to intercept misspelled search queries. We reached out to xAI and asked. But xAI doesn’t own the name “bot.com” or other obviously misspelled domains like “vot.com” that are up for sale.

The Internet theory is much funnier: Musk (or his team) pulled a prank after learning about a new OpenAI product and its name, and bought the domain name.

In fact, anonymous X user and xAI watcher @birdabo (a person who calls himself the “Chief Poster @SpaceXAI”) was the first to spot the domain name in the post that went viral. Whatever the motivation, the circumstance is funny.

As for the domain “dots.com”, which more closely matches the name of the product, it is currently owned by a long-defunct company. So if a petty revenge prank really was the motivation, then naming it would be next level too.
